Oakwood
HISTORY
French merchants were the first recorded Europeans here in Oakwood, in 1675 Jacques Guyon received a grant of 200 acres of land from the local governor. A year later a survey was noted to have a house on the land granted to Guyon. Years passed and his land formed into a neighborhood. Guyon Ave is a main Road which runs from Mill Road to Amboy Road in the town of Oakwood. The Oakwood Park Hotel once stood on the site where the Oakwood Shopping center now is on Clark Avenue and Amboy Road. A small hub in Oakwood is known for having some of the most charming streets on Staten Island. Many of the streets to the right and left of Guyon Avenue between South Railroad Avenue and Hylan Blvd are simply beautiful. The surrounding aesthetic setting has distinctive well cared for homes with character, impeccable landscaping and mature trees.

Captain Roald Amundsen Plaza located at Amboy Road near Clark Ave and Ridel Street. (Amundsen Circle 1890- Est.) Named after a Norwegian Explorer. The nearby Greenbelt woods located along Ridel Avenue has a 4/12 mile trail. Occasionally found there are concrete artifacts from homes that were once in the area when it was still very rural. Pieces of the great depression such as bricks, chimneys and foundations are known to have been seen there.
Clawson playground connected and adjacent to the PS 50 school yard on Adelaide Avenue. This neighborhood park has a baseball field, Basket Ball Courts and a small play unit for younger children located behind the school. Neighborhood residents enjoy the recreation facilities of this park, there is also a unique outdoor classroom at this location.
