Prince’s Bay

History

Prince’s Bay is on the South Shore of Staten Island. It was originally a fishing Village famous for their oysters, prominent seafood restaurants would offer the oysters on their menus. This Staten Island town was once popular for summer homes. The Manee-Seguine Homestead 509 Seguine Ave Prince’s Bay, Staten Island, New York is a designated landmark and is known to be one of the oldest homes in the five boroughs. According to The Landmarks Conservancy this house may extend back to the late 17th century. The Seguine House at 440 Seguine Ave also a designated landmark is a gorgeous Greek Revival Mansion built-in lemon Creek Park in 1838. This Seguine House is also called the Seguine Burke Plantation, free guided tours are offered by appointment. There was a functioning Prince’s Bay lighthouse and light keepers’ house built-in 1864 located near the South side of Mt. Loretto in the buff of Prince’s bay. Sadly the lighthouse was deactivated in 1922. Mount Loretto once a catholic orphanage and the largest farm in New York State now operates more like as a social service agency. Prince’s Bay is home to Plantation Bay Boat Marina and a boatman’s association which has been in existence since 1934. The S.S. White Dental Manufacturing Company was built-in 1881 occupied the shoreline and was the largest employer in all of Staten Island, in 1972 it closed. Afterwards in the late 1970’s a unique shopping center named the Princes Bay Trade Mart opened for business inside the building but closed after few years later due to competing with the Staten Island Mall for customers. This Staten Island town was once the site of a Quarantine Hospital, arsonists destroyed it before the facility was completed. Prince’s Bay was also the site of the 160 bed voluntary Richmond Memorial Hospital which was operated by the Dreyfus Foundation. Now Staten Island University Hospital South affiliated with North Shore LIJ is at 475 Seguine Ave SI NY 10309.
