HISTORY

New Dorp is a town on the East shore of Staten Island NY in zip code 10306. Its name was derived from the Dutch name Nieu which means New, Dutch English Dictonary  to see the Dutch-English translation. Once populated by American Indians, the Raritan’s and Lenape tribes. This town was also the center of a lot of activity during the American Revolution.  The prominent Vanderbilt family lived in New Dorp years ago. Many of the family members are buried in the Moravian Cemetery. Today New Dorp is a lovely residential community with tree – lined Streets which has a mixture of charming older and newer homes.  It has a unique area of commercial space that the public has utilized for many years which includes a train station, a library a municipal parking lot and much more. New Dorp Lane’s shopping has been a main stay over the course of many years. It’s so nice to take a stroll down New Dorp Lane to see local unique mom and pop businesses in action. New Dorp Lane is decorated every year during the Christmas season, it’s also a host to the Columbus Day Parade which begins and ends in new Dorp. It starts at Miller Field and ends at New Dorp Plaza. Recently New Dorp Lane’s restaurateurs hosted a Restaurant Crawl . Besides New Dorp Lane there are a number of other large shopping Centers in New Dorp Staten Island that are thriving. Many national name brand and big box stores are in these shopping centers.

PARKS

World War Veteran’s Park at Miller: Part of Gateway National Recreation Area.  The former Army air Corps base. Named for Captain James Ely Miller who was the first American aviator killed in combat during World War 1 in France. Located below Hylan Blvd, between New Dorp Lane and Greely Ave. This park has 187 acres of space, baseball and softball fields, Cricket, Bocce Court, playgrounds and a picnic area. When owned by the Vanderbilt family this site was once a working farm.

Dugan Playground: Weed Ave between Tysens La and Bet. Tysens La. and Isernia Ave. Baseball fields, Basketball courts, playground and spray showers.
